The decision of the A.S.F. had not been received by me when the

tragedy occurred, but B. 543 knew I had reported him. Further on

June 16th B.543 had been put on report by the A.S.P. himself at

quarterly inspection and fined 50 cents later.

On July 21st about 2 p.m. I left the Station on duty. About 5

p.m. I was returning to the Station by the main path up from the

road. As I came for the first time in full sight of the Station

I heard a rifle shot fired. I did not hear the bullet and

couldn't tell whence the shot came. I looked and saw several

persons by the trees to the right of the compound gate. I then

heard a second shot which appeared to come from the N.W. side of

the Station. I could not see who fired and had no idea what was

being fired at. Then I saw an Indian, whom I identified as

P.C.B.543 by his orange turban, appear from the left of the

Station and move towards the main path. I saw him raise his

rifle to his shoulder, point it at me and fire. I heard no

bullet pass. I was too far away, 70-80 yards, to use my revolver

Bo I got off the path to the right and made for the Indian

married quarters. I heard 3 or 4 more shots fired, but couldn't

tall at whom. I shouted as I ran "Get me a rifle.* When I got

to the quarters I heard the alarm bell ringing up at the Station

and in the quarters. The two Indians in the quarters, P.S.B.135

Mustan Singh and P.C.B.384 Santa Singh, were arming themselves.

It was not more than 3 minutes after the first shot was fired

that the alarm bell rang. Each Indian in the Station and, in the

married quarters has his rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition

easily accessible. I took the rifle of P.S.B.135 and some rounds

of ammunition and gave him my revolver. I told B.384 to work

round under cover to the front of the Station and try to draw

the man's fire. I could see the top floor back verandah but saw

no one moving there. I can't recollect hearing any shots after

reaching the married quarters.
